The 2022-23 season concluded with the Sharks having a record of 22-44-16, giving them the fourth-lowest amount of points in the NHL. In the NHL draft, they were awarded the No. 4 pick and used it to select Will Smith, a forward from the United States national team development program who is currently playing for Boston College. This selection was a strategic move in their ongoing efforts to rebuild the team. Two weeks before Quinn was hired, the Sharks traded venerable defenseman Brent Burns to the Carolina Hurricanes. During Quinn’s first season, the team also traded away star forward Timo Meier at that year’s deadline and would ultimately trade away star defenseman Erik Karlsson, who won the Norris Trophy, to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the offseason.

Reworded: The San Jose Sharks had the lowest number of goals scored per 60 minutes, the highest number of goals allowed per 60 minutes, the most scoring chances allowed per 60 minutes, and the second-lowest team save percentage. These were all contributing reasons behind the team having the worst record in the NHL.

  • Quinn was fired on Wednesday after only two seasons. This decision was made shortly after the Sharks (19-54-9) suffered three consecutive losses and lost five out of their last six games, resulting in the worst record in the National Hockey League for the regular season.

It was anticipated that Quinn’s second season would present even greater challenges.

Before the 2022-23 season, the Sharks recruited Quinn to lead a team going through changes. From 2003-04 to 2018-19, the Sharks only missed the playoffs twice, but in the three years prior to Quinn’s hiring, they did not make it to the postseason.

“After completing our annual process of internal discussions and assessing the current state of our team, we have decided to replace our head coach,” announced Sharks general manager Mike Grier. “David has been a fantastic coach and person, and I would like to personally express my gratitude for his dedication over the past two seasons. Despite facing challenges, he and his staff performed admirably and I am grateful for their handling of the situation.”Finding a new coach will come in an offseason that could also see the Sharks take a major step in their rebuild by winning the draft lottery for the first time in franchise history. Winning this year’s lottery would allow the Sharks a chance to take the consensus No. 1 pick in Boston University freshman center Macklin Celebrini, who won the Hobey Baker Award as the top men’s collegiate player in the nation.

Celebrini was raised in North Vancouver, but later relocated to the Bay Area when his father, Rick, obtained employment with the Golden State Warriors. Prior to attending BU, Celebrini spent a season with the San Jose Jr. Sharks and had a successful freshman year with 32 goals and 64 points.

After leading the New York Rangers for three years, Quinn was dismissed following the 2020-21 season when the team failed to make the playoffs after making it in his second year.

The Sharks had a poor start, losing their first 11 games and only winning 5 out of their first 20. Between December 15th and January 9th, they suffered 15 consecutive losses. Later in February, they broke a losing streak with a victory against the Ottawa Senators on March 9th, but then went on to lose 9 more games in a row.

San Jose has parted ways with David Quinn following a disappointing season where they ranked second to last in points during the salary cap era.
