According to ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel, the Mets have plans to bring up Christian Scott, a promising pitcher, and he is expected to make his first appearance against the Rays on Saturday. Since he is not currently on the 40-man roster, the Mets will have to make room for him by making a corresponding roster move.

Scott’s duration may be influenced by additional variables. Kodai Senga, Tylor Megill, and David Peterson are currently on the injured list, and their eventual comebacks will impact the rotation moving forward. Senga and Peterson are on the 60-day injured list and are not eligible to return until late May, but Megill has started a rehab assignment and may be considered in a few weeks. Of course, Scott’s performance in his first major league appearance will also play a role in these decisions.

He moved up to Double-A last year and pitched 87 2/3 innings, achieving a 2.57 ERA. He had a high strikeout rate of 31.9% and low walk rate at 3.6%. In 2024, FanGraphs placed him as the 98th best prospect in baseball, while ESPN ranked him #99. FanGraphs analysts Longenhagen and Taruskin noted that he transformed his changeup into a splitter, enhancing his sinker/slider dominated pitch repertoire with a strong third option.

Despite the duration of time that Scott spends in the major leagues for the rest of the season, he will not be able to accrue a full year of service time due to the fact that the season is currently over a month old. The new collective bargaining agreement allows high-level prospects to gain a full year of service even if they are called up late, as long as they finish in the top two for Rookie of the Year voting. However, this exception will not apply to Scott. To qualify for this benefit, a player must be listed on at least two out of the three top 100 lists from ESPN, Baseball America, and MLB Pipeline. Unfortunately, Scott was only listed on one of these lists. This means that the Mets will have control over him until the 2023 season, even if he remains in the major leagues for the rest of the season.

Furthermore, due to his impressive performance, he will likely climb up the rankings and earn a spot on the major league team. The Mets’ starting rotation currently includes Sean Manaea, Luis Severino, Jose Quintana, Adrian Houser, and José Buttó. Buttó is the only member of the group with an option to be sent down, but he has been performing well this year with a 2.57 ERA. According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, there is speculation that Scott’s call-up to the majors may be due to the Mets’ upcoming schedule of 26 games in 27 days. It is possible that Scott’s promotion will just be a temporary measure to give the other pitchers a rest.

His ranking on the season-opening lists for MLB Pipeline and Baseball America did not make the cut, but he has climbed to #62 on BA’s latest update. This significant improvement is a result of Scott’s impressive performance this year, aside from a few home runs given up. In the five starts he has made in Triple-A so far in 2024, he has struck out 38.3% of batters while keeping his walk rate at 6.4%. However, due to seven fly balls resulting in home runs, his ERA stands at 3.20.

Scott, who turned 25 in June, was chosen by the Mets in the fifth round of the 2021 draft. However, his performance has significantly improved since then. In 2022, he pitched a total of 58 2/3 innings for Single-A and High-A teams, recording a not-so-impressive 4.45 ERA. However, his underlying metrics were strong, with a 29.5% strikeout rate and an 8.4% walk rate. If it weren’t for a high .381 batting average on balls in play and a 68.1% strand rate, his results would have been much better. In fact, his FIP for that year was 2.77.
