Avilés Hosts 22nd Edition of “Villa de Avilés” International Judo Tournament
Avilés, a town known for its unwavering commitment to judo, is once again set to captivate the judo community with the 22nd edition of the “Villa de Avilés” International Tournament. This prestigious event will gather an impressive number of 1,800 judokas from various countries, including Moldova, Italy, Portugal, France, and the newcomer, Andorra. The historic participation numbers highlight the tournament’s significance in the judo world.
A Prideful Achievement for Judo Avilés
Carlos Fernández, the organizer of the tournament and technical director of Judo Avilés, expressed his pride in filling Asturias with judo. During the presentation, Fernández acknowledged the hard work of his team and emphasized the positive impact of sports events on society. He also highlighted the economic boost that the tournament brings to the region, as Avilés lacks sufficient hotel capacity to accommodate the influx of participating families. Fernández confidently stated that this event will elevate Avilés’ reputation in European judo.
Villa: A Remarkable Tournament in Spain
José Ramón Maseda, president of the Asturian Judo Federation, hailed Villa as one of the most important tournaments in Spain, if not the most significant. Maseda emphasized the unique aspect of the tournament, with 1,800 families coming together, and praised the warm welcome extended to visiting clubs. He acknowledged the hard work behind the scenes and the positive impact on both the clubs and the growth of Asturias.
Avilés: A City Embracing the Tournament
Mayor Mariví Monteserín expressed the city’s enthusiasm for hosting such a significant sporting event. She emphasized the event’s ability to attract visitors from outside the region and showcase the potential of the entire region. Monteserín highlighted the importance of collaboration to create an enriching experience for all participants and the positive impact on the city’s reputation.
Economic Boost and Distinguished Guests
The Villa tournament will not only provide an economic boost to the region but also enliven the streets of various Asturian cities. The first day of the tournament will witness the presence of the President of the Principality, Adrián Barbón, fulfilling his promise to return to Villa in 2022. On the second day, the General Director of Physical Activity and Sports, Manuela Fernández, will grace the event with her presence.
Engaging Activities Beyond the Tournament
In an effort to involve the city in the tournament, Villa has partnered with the Brotherhood of Good HDL Cholesterol for the “Heart-Healthy Breakfasts” event. Additionally, guided tours of the historic center, initiated by the Aviles City Council last year, will be offered free of charge. Visitors can join a guided pedestrian tour to explore the city’s significant landmarks, spaces, and buildings, delving into its rich history.
