Controversy Surrounds Somali Athlete’s Performance at World University Games
Unprepared Athlete Sparks Outrage
The recent World University Games have been marred by controversy as the president of the Somali Athletics Foundation faces criticism for sending an unprepared athlete to represent the country. Nasra Ali Abukar, a Somali athlete, participated in the women’s 100m category without adequate training and preparation for such a significant sporting event.
A Disappointing Performance
Nasra’s performance on the track was far from impressive, finishing the race with a time of 21.81 seconds, nearly 10 seconds behind her competitors. This result has been deemed the slowest in the history of international competitions, putting Somalia in an unfavorable position on the global stage.
Suspicions of Nepotism Arise
The selection of an underprepared athlete has raised suspicions of nepotism. Nasra Ali Abukar happens to be the niece of Khadija Adan Dahir, the vice president of the Somali Athletics Foundation. Many voices have questioned the reasoning behind choosing an athlete without proper training for such a prestigious event.
Management Under Scrutiny
The president of the foundation is also facing criticism for allowing an unprepared athlete to compete in an international event. This incident has brought into question the management of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, which should ensure that representatives are adequately prepared and trained to compete on behalf of the country.
