The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s tennis team suffered a narrow 4-3 defeat against the Stephen F. Austin (SFA) Ladyjacks in a Southland Conference (SLC) match held at the Orville Cox Tennis Center on Monday.

Doubles Play Sets the Stage

UTRGV initially gained momentum, securing leads on all three doubles courts. Despite challenging windy conditions, the Vaqueros demonstrated success with strategic lobs. However, SFA responded effectively, rallying on the top two courts.

The duo of Felicia Back/Sonja Rooth secured the first doubles victory for UTRGV with a 6-2 win. Maria Bakhtina and Hitakamaya Narwal followed suit, winning their match on Court 3 with a score of 6-2. The decisive doubles point came down to Court 2, where Avery Kinsey and Ana Paula Chavez of SFA ultimately prevailed 6-4, giving SFA a 1-0 lead.

Singles Competition Sees Intense Battles

The singles matches were highly competitive, with SFA winning the first set on three courts. UTRGV demonstrated resilience, battling to take two of the first sets in tiebreakers, thanks to Rhea Makesar on Court 4 and Luna Buijtenhuijs on Court 5.

Barbara Martinez evened the match at 1-1 with a strong performance in the No. 1 flight. She defeated Back 7-5, 6-1, displaying fiery play and powerful stroke.

Vaqueros Fight Back, But SFA Secures Victory

SFA regained the lead with wins on Courts 3 and 2, establishing a 3-1 advantage. However, UTRGV refused to concede.

Buijtenhuijs continued her strong play, winning her match on Court 5 with a score of 7-6 (7:2), 6-4, tying the match at 3-3.

Alkmini Giannakogiorgou clinched the victory for SFA with a 7-6 (7:5), 7-5 win on Court 6.
