Team USA Claims Olympic Gold in Dramatic Hockey Overtime Victory

MILAN – For the first time since the 1980 “Miracle on Ice,” the U.S. Men’s hockey team has won Olympic gold. Jack Hughes scored the game-winning goal at 1:41 of overtime, securing a 2-1 victory over rival Canada on Sunday.

Golden Goal Seals Historic Victory

Hughes’ decisive goal came after Zach Werenski stripped Nathan MacKinnon of the puck and delivered a cross-ice pass to an open Hughes, who fired a wrist shot past Canada’s Jordan Binnington. The win marks the third Olympic gold medal for the United States in men’s ice hockey.

“What we have is all about our country right now,” Hughes told NBC. “I love the USA, I love my teammates. It’s unbelievable.”

Hellebuyck Stands Tall in Net

U.S. Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck was instrumental in the victory, stopping 41 shots. His performance included a crucial breakaway save on Connor McDavid and a desperation stick save against Devon Toews.

“Unbelievable game by Hellebuyck,” Jack Hughes said. “He was our best player tonight, by mile. Unreal game by our team. That’s just a gutsy win. that’s American hockey right there.”

Game Summary

Matt Boldy scored the initial goal for the United States, tying the game after Cale Makar had put Canada ahead. The game remained tied until Hughes’ overtime heroics. Canada outshot the U.S. 19-8 in the second period.

The U.S. Men had not defeated Canada in a best-on-best competition since the 1996 World Cup of Hockey.

Crosby Absent for Canada

Canada played without captain Sidney Crosby, who was sidelined with a lower-body injury sustained in the quarterfinal victory against Czechia. Crosby’s absence meant Connor McDavid wore the “C” for the game.

A Tribute to Johnny Gaudreau

As part of the celebration, U.S. Captain Auston Matthews, Werenski and Matthew Tkachuk skated around the ice with the jersey of the late Johnny Gaudreau. Team USA hung Gaudreau’s jersey in its locker room for each game during the tournament as a tribute.

This victory caps off a successful Olympic tournament for USA Hockey, following the U.S. Women’s team’s gold medal win over Canada on Thursday.
