Slovenia’s Kristjan Ceh Sets New National Record in Discus Throw

– Slovenia’s Kristjan Ceh strengthened his position at No.6 on the world all-time list in the men’s discus event, tossing a new national and meeting record of 72.34m at the Boris Hanzekovic Memorial, a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting. Ceh’s impressive throw is the farthest in Europe in 35 years, according to the elite athlete himself.

I think this is the farthest throw in Europe in 35 years. It’s a great achievement and a very long distance.

Ceh, the 2022 world champion, had previously shared the sixth position with four other athletes but now stands alone, only trailing Mykolas Alekna, Matthew Denny, Jurgen Schult, Virgilijus Alekna, and Gerd Kanter. The 26-year-old Slovenian was delighted with his performance, believing it was a result of his excellent training compared to last year.

Other notable achievements from the Zagreb meet:

  • Women’s Discus: Croatia’s Sandra Elkasevic secured her 12th victory in the event, throwing 65.03m with her opening attempt.
  • Men’s Hammer: France’s Yann Chaussinand improved his personal best and world lead from 81.56m to 81.91m to win the event.
  • Men’s Shot Put: USA’s Payton Otterdahl snatched victory from New Zealand’s Tom Walsh on countback after both athletes threw 21.71m.

Sprint Stars Shine and Records Tumble

A talented lineup of sprinters did not disappoint in Zagreb. Olympic 100m champion Julien Alfred strolled to a 200m triumph in 22.15 (-0.8m/s), while South Africa’s Bayanda Walaza continued to make a name for himself, improving his personal best in the 100m to 9.94 (-0.3m/s).

I was hoping to run a bit faster, to be honest, but it is not about time, it is a long season.

To be one of the fastest juniors feels like an honour and makes me want to work more, be strong, and win.

In the women’s 1500m, Ethiopia’s world 10,000m champion Gudaf Tsegay made a winning debut, setting a meeting record of 3:58.14. Kenya’s 18-year-old Denis Kipkoech pulled off a surprise victory in the 5000m, crossing the line in a significant personal best of 13:03.17.

Hurdles and Multi-Events: Palmarès of Champions

USA’s Alaysha Johnson passed her rivals in the closing stages to win the women’s 100m hurdles in 12.82 (1.1m/s). Meanwhile, Dylan Beard of the USA held off a fast-finishing Omar McLeod to win the men’s 110m hurdles memorial race in 13.20 (0.3m/s). Norway’s Amalie Iuel and Spain’s Paula Sevilla snatched victories in the women’s 400m hurdles and 400m events, respectively.
