Rublev Powers Past Royer, Awaits Humbert in Dubai Showdown
By Aurélie Sacchelli February 24, 2026
Dubai – Andrey Rublev advanced to the second round of the ATP 500 tournament in Dubai after a straight-set victory over Valentin Royer. The Russian will now face Ugo Humbert in what promises to be a challenging match.
Royer Falls Short Against Rublev
Valentin Royer was unable to overcome the challenge posed by world No. 18 Andrey Rublev, falling 6-3, 6-4 in a match that lasted one hour and 29 minutes. This result leaves three French players – Ugo Humbert, Arthur Rinderknech and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard – remaining in the competition.
“Opposed to world No. 18 Andrey Rublev, winner of the tournament in 2022, No. 54 was only able to resist for 1 hour 29 minutes, the time to lose 6-3, 6-4.”
Rublev, the 2022 Dubai champion and recent semi-finalist in Doha, demonstrated his serving prowess with nine aces. He successfully defended the two break points created by Royer, who has only secured one win in seven matches played in 2026.
Humbert-Rublev: A Match to Watch
Despite the win, Rublev had opportunities to close out the match more quickly, converting 16 of his break point chances. The second set saw a shift in momentum, with Rublev ultimately securing the victory on Royer’s serve.
“It is therefore the Russian who will be the adversary of Ugo Humbert in a match that promises a lot between two players in solid shape.”
Rublev holds a 4-2 head-to-head advantage over Humbert, though the two haven’t met since October 2023. Royer, who achieved success with Challenger titles in Rwanda last year, will make his debut at the Indian Wells Masters 1000 tournament.
Jakub Mensik also secured a victory on Tuesday, defeating Hubert Hurkacz 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) in 1 hour and 28 minutes, highlighted by 11 aces. Mensik will next face Alexei Popyrin.
