Nguyen Thuy Linh, Vietnam’s leading badminton player, is currently competing in the 2026 All England Open Championships, but her journey to the tournament was far from straightforward. The 28-year-old routinely competes in approximately 20 international tournaments annually, often traveling and managing all aspects of her competition – nutrition, training, and technical adjustments – independently.

This lack of support is due to limited funding, forcing Linh to operate as a “one-man show” while many other athletes benefit from a coaching staff. Vietnamese fans express concern watching her compete without a coach present to offer guidance during matches.

A Harrowing Travel Experience

Reaching England for the All England Open proved particularly difficult. Her initial flight, scheduled for February 28th with a connection in Qatar, was canceled due to airspace closures resulting from conflict in the Middle East. Securing an alternative flight on short notice was a significant challenge, threatening her participation in the prestigious tournament.

Linh secured a flight with two layovers in Mumbai, India, and Paris, France. She was fortunate, as former world number one Sindhu of India was unable to travel due to being stranded in the UAE.

Current Ranking and Olympic Aspirations

As of February 17, 2026, Nguyen Thuy Linh holds a world ranking of 22nd in women’s singles, having previously reached a career-high of 17th in September 2025. This ranking allows her to participate in elite tournaments like the All England Open, which boasts a prize pool of $1.45 million (over 37 billion dong).

Linh’s primary goals for 2026 include participation in the Asian Games (ASIAD 20) in Japan and qualifying for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. She is focused on accumulating ranking points to achieve this Olympic qualification.

Upcoming Schedule

Following the All England Open Championships, Nguyen Thuy Linh is scheduled to compete in the Swiss Open (March 10-15) and the Orléans Masters in France (March 17-22).

First Round Matchup

Today, Linh will face Denmark’s Line Christophersen (ranked 23rd) in the first round of the 2026 All England Badminton Championships.
