Christie Seeks Motivation Boost for All England Title Defense

Defending champion Jonatan Christie is prioritizing mental preparation and personal connection as he aims for a second YONEX All England badminton title. The Indonesian star will begin his 2026 campaign on Wednesday against Jia Heng Jason Teh.

Seeking a Repeat Performance

Christie, currently the fourth seed, acknowledges the increased competition since his unexpected victory in 2024. “I hope I can repeat two years ago when I became the champion, so I hope to be the champion again here,” he stated. “But I grasp that all players have improved a lot, so It’s not uncomplicated to develop into champion again here.”

The Power of Connection

The 28-year-old revealed a unique strategy for maintaining motivation: regular video calls with his family. “I need more energy, I need more motivation to get ready every time I play. Every day, when I am travelling, every time I will video call with them, due to the fact that I miss looking at my son, to look at his smile, to look at my wife’s smile.”

A Look Back at the 2024 Triumph

Christie’s path to victory in 2024 was challenging, including wins over Chou Tien-Chen and world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn. He also benefited from a quarter-final retirement by Shi Yu Qi and a semi-final win against Lakshya Sen (21-12 10-21 21-15). The final saw an all-Indonesian clash against Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, which Christie won 21-15 21-14.

“It is a highly memorable moment for me because we didn’t know if we could meet in the final,” he explained. “We made history after 30 years having an all-Indonesian final again, maybe it was Hariyanto Arbi who was the last one to be in an all-Indonesian final at All England. So we made history again.”

Focus on the Present

Despite a favorable opening to the draw with the elimination of top seed Shi and eighth seed Alex Lanier, Christie remains focused on his own game. He added, My preparation is like usual, I just seek to focus on my body, on my skills and just be more clear to enjoy the game and enjoy the match. He intends to concentrate on his own performance against Teh, acknowledging the opponent’s capabilities while prioritizing his own strategy. I just want to focus on my side. I know Jason has some really great plays, but for me, I just need to focus on my side.
