WBC Roster Shakeup: LG Twins’ Yoo Young-chan Replaces Injured Samsung Pitcher

Published February 15, 2026

The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) announced a significant roster change for the upcoming World Baseball Classic (WBC) on Friday, February 15th. Samsung Lions pitcher Won Tae-in will be unable to participate due to injury and has been replaced by LG Twins closer, Yoo Young-chan.

This marks the second pitching change for the Korean team, following earlier injury concerns with other players. The KBO has requested approval for the player substitution from the WBC organizing committee.

Injury Details

Won Tae-in initially experienced elbow discomfort during spring training in Guam last month. After an initial examination in Korea revealed no specific findings, he continued training in Okinawa, Japan. However, the pain persisted, leading to a return to Korea for further evaluation on February 13th. He was subsequently diagnosed with a first-stage elbow flexor injury.

“It’s not a serious injury, but we need about three weeks of rest.”

While the injury is not considered severe, the timing – less than three weeks before the start of the WBC – makes participation impossible for Won Tae-in.

LG Twins’ Growing Presence

With Yoo Young-chan’s addition, the LG Twins now have seven players representing them on the national team. This follows a recent trend of increased representation from the LG Twins in international competitions, mirroring a similar period of dominance by the Doosan Bears in previous years.

Players like Park Dong-won, Moon Bo-kyung, and Shin Min-jae are also expected to be key contributors for the national team.

Looking Ahead

Despite the injury setbacks, the Korean team remains focused on preparing for the WBC. Coach Ryu Ji-hyun opted to fill the roster spot with a player already familiar with the team’s training regimen, demonstrating confidence in Yoo Young-chan’s ability to contribute.

The team acknowledges the potential for further injuries given the demanding schedule leading up to and during the tournament, but remains optimistic about their chances.
