Barcelona has the opportunity to move back into first place in La Liga this Sunday afternoon. Following a 2-1 defeat to Girona on Monday, manager Hansi Flick addressed concerns about a lack of leadership within the team.

Flick Calls for Increased Intensity and Leadership

The Blaugrana slipped to second place after the loss to Girona, allowing Real Madrid to take the lead. Flick acknowledged the team’s recent struggles, stating, “I don’t desire to talk about the referee. Everyone saw the match.” He pinpointed a dip in performance during the Girona match, noting, “The first 15-20 minutes went well, but then we lost our rhythm and, despite having chances, we didn’t capitalize on them.”

Flick emphasized the need for greater intensity and a stronger sense of responsibility among his players. “It was clear that we were not playing with the necessary intensity. We need leaders, and that’s what we’ve been talking about. It is important to perceive and take responsibility for our goals. When the players give their all, the quality is great, and sometimes there are no clearly identified leaders, but that is also part of our job, and I have confidence in my team.”

Positive Injury Updates Boost Morale

Despite the recent setbacks, Flick remains optimistic, citing the return of key players as a significant boost. He expressed excitement about the progress of Pedri and Rashford, and the gradual recovery of Gavi. “I can’t wait. We have turned the page and we must move forward. The positive thing is that Pedri and Rashford are back, and Gavi is progressing little by little.”

Regarding Pedri’s potential involvement, Flick stated, “He may have the opportunity to play a few minutes. The positive thing is that he is already training with the group. He is a different leader because of his qualities, and he could develop into one of those leaders in the future.” He also provided an update on Gavi’s rehabilitation: “You have to take it step by step. It’s very important to manage this gradually. He is very involved and almost always makes good decisions with the ball. He enjoys playing football, not only thanks to his mind, but also thanks to his qualities. It’s great that he’s progressing, but he has to take it slowly. The physiotherapists and the rest of the staff do a fantastic job.”

Flick is determined to observe his team bounce back in their upcoming match against Levante. “Do I glance defeated? I am very focused. These two days of rest allowed us to take stock and see how the team is doing and how it has progressed. When this kind of situation affects us, we lose confidence, but it is time to pull ourselves together and continue to progress. The coach identified areas needing improvement, including ball retention, defensive transitions, and spatial awareness. “There are many areas for improvement, and they are constantly evolving. We lose the ball too often, we have difficulty covering spaces during transitions, defending well behind the line… If we lose too many balls and we are poorly positioned, we leave spaces. These are just a few examples, but there are more. We also didn’t react well after losing the ball and we didn’t know how to exploit the spaces.”
