Zach Johnson Begins Champions Tour Journey After Illustrious PGA Tour Career
Zach Johnson celebrated his 50th birthday on February 24th and will immediately transition to the PGA Tour Champions. He has announced his debut will be next week at the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational.
A Career Defined by Majors and Consistency
Johnson’s career boasts victories including the Masters and the Open Championship. He has consistently competed at the highest level, playing at least 17 PGA TOUR events for 22 consecutive seasons.
The former Ryder Cup captain is looking forward to the new challenge, but doesn’t anticipate an easy transition. He acknowledged receiving messages from friends and family expecting immediate success on the Champions Tour.
“I’m invigorated to go out there and, you recognize, not accept a head cover off on a par 4,” Johnson said with a chuckle. “I’m not taking it for granted. I experience like I’ve earned my diploma, and I’m gonna make the jump to greener pastures, more or less.”
Facing a New Generation of Competition
Johnson is realistic about the competition he’ll face. He expects to compete against players who were already challenging him decades ago.
“Part of me says: I still have a lot of very good golf ahead of me, and I would like to do it against the best. But first, I have to stay healthy, and second, I’m going to face guys who are one, two, three, four, five, six years older than me. 25 years ago, there was already this age gap, and they often beat me. So why should I assume it will be so easy? These guys are good.”
He expressed excitement about potential tournament locations, including the Principal Charity Classic in Iowa and a return to Firestone Country Club.
Despite the anticipation, Johnson remains focused on the immediate task. “competition remains competition”.
“I hope I have stage fright,” he said. “I hope that’s the case, because that means I’m in the game.”
