Historic Final Showdown

Mülheim an der Ruhr played host to a remarkable event at the YONEX German Open Badminton Championships, culminating in an unprecedented all-brother final in the men’s singles competition. Christo Popov and Toma Junior Popov of France faced off for the title on March 1, 2026, marking a unique moment in international badminton history.

Christo Popov secured the victory, defeating his older brother 21-16, 21-15. It wasn’t a normal match. On the one hand, we both wanted to win, but at the same time that means that the brother loses. So we had a slightly different approach than usual, explained Christo Popov after the match.

Road to the Final

Top seed Christo Popov overcame Lin Chun-Yi in a hard-fought semi-final match, winning 21-10, losing the second game 21-18, and then closing out the contest 21-18. Toma Junior Popov, the sixth seed, advanced more directly, defeating Chi Yu Jen in straight games 21-19, 21-15.

Toma Junior Popov reflected on his performance, stating, Nobody expected me to reach the final. I played a lot of good matches and spent a lot of time on the court, while also acknowledging a positive outcome despite the loss.

Other Tournament Highlights

The German Open saw success for other athletes as well. In women’s singles, Han Qian Xi, an unseeded player, upset top seed Wang Zhi Yi. In the men’s doubles, Chen Bo Yang/Liu Yi defeated Julien Maio/William Villeger, who had advanced from qualifying rounds.

The tournament will continue to be held at the Westenergie sports hall in Mülheim an der Ruhr.
