Yoga Teacher Wins Lawsuit After Unannounced Exercises Triggered Trauma
Teacher’s Unpleasant Experience During Yoga Course in India
A British yoga teacher, Melissa Revell, won a lawsuit against a yoga course that she attended in India in 2019. The yoga company, TYP International Ltd, led by British instructor Jamie Clarke and Mexican Dulce Aguilar, withdrew its legal defense due to lack of funds, allowing Revell to receive compensation for the damages suffered.
Self-Exploration Exercises Unannounced in Program
According to Revell’s testimony, the yoga course included self-exploration exercises not listed in the program. One particular session focused on “exploring childhood memories and relationships with their parents” where participants had to pair up and make physical contact while imagining the other person was their father or mother.
Following this session, Revell began shaking and experienced “overwhelming anxiety.”
Before and After the Course: A Shocking Contrast
Before the course, Revell was in good physical and mental health. Now, she has been diagnosed with “significant and severe complex post-traumatic stress disorder” and “functional neurological disorder.” She has gone from being active and working to being “unable to take care of herself.” Her relationship also ended as a result of her psychological condition, and she has experienced significant weight gain, describing her life as “extremely lonely, poor and dysfunctional.”
Company’s Initial Denial
Initially, company representatives denied any responsibility, stating in their defense documents that the course did not include psychological or psychotherapeutic components. However, Jamie Clarke later told the High Court in London that the company had ceased trading in July 2022, and due to lack of funds, they were unable to defend themselves against the lawsuit.
Lawsuit Proceeds in Favor of the Plaintiff
Master Judge John Dagnall made a conditional order requiring Clarke to confirm whether he would defend the case personally. Since no effective opposition was presented, the court proceeded in favor of the plaintiff.
Importance of Transparency and Mental Health Considerations
The situation highlights the importance of transparency in the content of wellness programs and the necessary considerations regarding the mental health of participants.
