Williams Delivers the Game-Winning Assist

The Seattle Storm showcased their skills and determination against a resilient New York Liberty side, with Gabby Williams’ tenth assist sealing a hard-fought 89-79 victory. In an intense clash between two of the season’s strongest contenders, it was the French duo of Williams and Dominique Malonga who stole the show on the Storm’s side.

Malonga and Johannès Thrive for the Liberty

New York found themselves playing without Sabrina Ionescu, struck down by a neck injury joining Jonquel Jones (ankle) on the sidelines. Stepping up for the Liberty was Marine Johannès, the French powerhouse who made the most of her first start of the season, leading her team’s offense with a personal best of 17 points, shooting an impressive 7/7 from the field, including 3/3 from beyond the arc.

“MJ” got New York off to a strong start with a quick 6 points in the first quarter, helping the Liberty take an early 24-22 advantage. She kept her team in the game throughout the first half, crucially draining two 3-pointers as time expired in the second quarter, giving New York a 43-42 lead at the break.

Reigniting New York’s offense in the third quarter was Johannès again, scoring five points amidst a 7-0 Liberty run that trimmed Seattle’s lead to just 7 (65-58) with less than two minutes remaining in the quarter.

The Storm’s Stunning Comeback

But just when it seemed New York had weathered the Storm’s early storm, Seattle hit back with three 3-pointers in less than a minute, two apiece from Erica Wheeler and Skylar Diggins, to reassert their dominance, leading 68-61 after three.

In the final quarter, Seattle remained unyielding, withstood an inspired comeback from the Liberty, and, thanks to a stunning, game-winning assist from Williams to Nneka Ogwumike with just seconds left on the clock, sealed a memorable victory.

Williams’ Double-Double Secures Win

Williams finished the game with 12 points, 10 assists, and 4 steals, leading the Storm to a crucial victory. Seattle also received strong contributions from Nneka Ogwumike (26 points, 7 rebounds), Skylar Diggins (20 points, 6 assists), and Ezi Magbegor (6 points, 8 rebounds).

The Liberty, meanwhile, saw promising performances from Marine Johannès (17 points), Natasha Cloud (18 points, 7 rebounds), and Breanna Stewart (18 points, 9 rebounds).
