The Impact of Time Limits

The pitch clock has emerged as a significant factor heading into the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC). The WBC, hosted by Major League Baseball (MLB), adopts many MLB rules, including the pitch clock, introduced in 2023 to improve game speed.

Violations of the pitch clock result in an automatic ball for the pitcher and an automatic strike for the batter.

Korean Team Adapts to the Clock

The Korean national team is preparing for the WBC by focusing on adapting to the pitch clock. The KBO League piloted the system in 2024 and officially implemented it in 2025. Although familiar, adjustments are expected due to differing application times.

With runners on base, the interval between pitches is 25 seconds in the KBO League, but is reduced to 18 seconds in the WBC. The same reduction applies when there are no runners on base. This requires pitchers to perform at a faster tempo and batters to prepare within the time limit.

Japan Faces Unique Challenges

The defending champion Japan baseball team faces a different challenge. Japanese Professional Baseball (NPB) has not yet implemented a pitch clock, leaving its players unfamiliar with the system.

During a WBC practice game on February 23rd, Teruaki Sato was called out on strikes due to a pitch clock violation. Hiroto Takahashi, the 2024 NPB ERA leader, also experienced confusion with the rule.

There are four (practice) games left until the WBC. Responding to the rules is also expected to be a challenge in the future. Tokyo Sports

To address this, active MLB player Yu Darvish held a private pitch clock training session for the team.
