Stan Wawrinka’s final match at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships concluded on Wednesday with a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Daniil Medvedev. The match also served as a farewell to the Swiss veteran, who triumphed at the ATP 500 event in 2016.
The 40-year-vintage Wawrinka, playing what he has announced will be his final season on the ATP Tour, was honored with a touching farewell ceremony following the match. Tournament Director Salah Tahlak and ATP CEO Eno Polo presented Wawrinka with a traditional dagger, a commemorative cake, and a framed photo showcasing his memories from Dubai.
“I came here for the first time more than 15 years ago and I always sense really welcome,” said Wawrinka. “It was amazing for me to have one last chance, one last opportunity, to play here. I will always have amazing memories from here [at] the tournament.”

Medvedev Dominates On Court
Daniil Medvedev advanced to the quarterfinals with a clinical performance, breaking Wawrinka’s serve three times in the opening set, which he secured 6-2 in just over thirty minutes. While Wawrinka briefly challenged in the second set, Medvedev’s consistency proved too strong, closing out the match 6-2, 6-3 in 75 minutes.
Medvedev will next face Jenson Brooksby after Brooksby defeated Karen Khachanov.
