Vitesse’s Disappointing Debut: A 4-0 Rout vs. Young AZ
Vitesse, after successfully appealing to regain its professional license, faced its first game in the first division. The result? A disappointing 4-0 loss to Young AZ.
Last-Minute Signings
In a race against time, Vitesse managed to sign three players before their first game, including two just before training started. The signings included one of their original players, Dillon Hoogewerf, who had his contract dissolved.
Visiting Vitesse Fans
Approximately 150 Vitesse fans traveled to Wijdewormer to support their team, and they made their presence heard when the team took the field.
Early Promise Faded
Hoogewerf had a promising chance in the 6th minute, but his effort was saved by Young AZ‘s goalkeeper, Arvid Kiyani.
The match ended up being one-sided, with Vitesse unable to make any impression against the Alkmaar promises, who had lost their first four games.
Back on Top
Young AZ‘s striker, Lequincio Zeefuik, put them on the scoreboard in the 21st minute, with a nice finish after a precise pass. After that, Vitesse struggled to get a grip on the game.
Worse to Come
In the 58th minute, Kevin Toppenberg scored the second goal for Young AZ, Dorido’s educated finish from a well-built combination. Vitesse’s miserable day ended with Zeefuik’s second goal, scored in the 76th minute.
Aftermath
Vitesse returns home with nil points, leaving them at -12. They will face RKC Waalwijk in their next game, on Tuesday.
“Vitesse has won its appeal against the Dutch FA (KNVB), which had withdrawn its professional license due to mismanagement and financial problems. The team can return to the first division.”– NOS
