Vinicius Suffers Injury to Right Femoral Biceps Muscle

Vinicius has been diagnosed with a lesion in the right femoral biceps muscle. This is the result of the tests conducted on the Brazilian player on Monday to determine the extent of the injury he suffered in Friday’s match against Celta, which forced him to leave the field after just fifteen minutes of play at Balaídos. Real Madrid released the medical report on Monday afternoon. “Following the tests carried out on our player Vini Jr. by the Medical Services of Real Madrid, it has been diagnosed that he has a lesion in the right femoral biceps muscle. The evolution of the injury is pending,” stated the club’s press release.

It has been ruled out that the tendon is affected, which would have resulted in a longer absence. The goal is for Vinicius to return on October 8th in the league match against Osasuna at the Bernabéu. This would mean missing six weeks, during which he would miss five league matches (including the derby against Atlético), Champions League games, and the September international break with the Brazilian national team, as they begin their journey towards the 2026 World Cup. If Vinicius doesn’t make it for the match against Osasuna, he will have two more weeks to continue his recovery, as there will be another international break after the visit of the Navarrese team.

The right femoral biceps muscle is the same muscle affected in the injuries of Ceballos (located in the distal tendon) and Mendy. Ceballos has been out for a month and a half, while Mendy has been sidelined for a month.

Vinicius, Four Years Without Visiting the Infirmary

This is the most serious injury Vinicius has suffered in the past four years. In March 2019, in the fateful match against Ajax, he suffered a ligament rupture in his right ankle that kept him out of action for almost two months. It is the only injury that has kept him away from the playing field for several matches since he joined Real Madrid. He has had two minor ailments since then, which have only prevented him from playing in a few specific matches. At the start of the 2022 season, he missed a La Liga match against Getafe and the first round of the Copa del Rey due to muscle discomfort, and in the final stretch of last season, he missed a match due to knee issues.

Half a Dozen Injured Players

This is the sixth injury suffered by the Real Madrid squad at the beginning of this season. Vinicius joins the list of absentees, which includes Mendy, Ceballos, Arda Güler, Courtois, and Militao. The latter two are likely to miss the entire season. Mendy and Ceballos have a shorter recovery timeline and are expected to return sometime in September. It is not ruled out that they could be available for this Saturday’s match against Getafe, but the club is being cautious and won’t take any risks. As for Arda Güler, he has a few more weeks ahead of him.
