Vietnamese Badminton Player Nguyen Hai Dang Rises Through the Ranks
Published: February 21, 2026
From Casual Play to Professional Pursuit
Nguyen Hai Dang, a badminton player from Ho Chi Minh City, is quickly becoming a standout athlete in Vietnam. Initially picking up the sport for fun following his older brother, Hai Dang’s amateur competitions and subsequent medals marked the beginning of his journey toward a professional career.
Born in 2000, Hai Dang currently holds a BWF ranking of 65 as of October 2025.
Overcoming Obstacles
Hai Dang’s path hasn’t been without challenges. He often travels and competes internationally alone, lacking the extensive support teams common among other athletes. From a young age until now, I have mainly played matches abroad. Whether I won or lost, no one shared my feelings, but the more I played matches, the more I got used to it and the more self-confidence I became,
said Hai Dang.
Financial constraints force him to independently manage travel arrangements, accommodation, and match schedules. He acknowledges a degree of envy towards athletes with larger teams but uses it as motivation to improve.
Earning Family Support
Initially, Hai Dang’s family disapproved of his pursuit of professional badminton, viewing it as too demanding. However, after witnessing his success – both nationally and internationally – they offered their full support.
Recent Achievements and Future Goals
In March 2023, Hai Dang reached a career-high ranking of 163rd with 8,910 points at the Thailand International Challenge, becoming Vietnam’s number one badminton player, ending a 21-year dominance by Tien Minh.
2025 proved to be a breakthrough year, with Hai Dang reaching the quarter-finals of the Vietnam Open and the semi-finals of the Al Ain Masters 2025 and the Indonesia Masters II 2025.
Looking ahead, Hai Dang aims to climb into the top 50 in the world rankings and secure a place at the 2028 Olympic Games in the USA. He is currently preparing for the Singapore International Challenge 2026, continuing to train diligently even during the Tet holiday.
