The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team started their 2026 season on a high note, defeating the University of Kansas Jayhawks 7-4 in front of an electric sellout crowd of 5,862 fans at the UTRGV Baseball Stadium. This marked the sixth-largest attendance in program history and the largest on opening day.

The Vaqueros gained early momentum in the bottom of the second inning, scoring four unearned runs. With the bases loaded, senior Damien Whitfield was hit by a pitch, and graduate student Diego Villescas and junior Armani Raygoza walked to force-in the runs, giving the Vaqueros a 4-2 lead.
