Stan Wawrinka Out of US Open; Venus Williams Returns After Absence

Wawrinka Misses Out on US Open

In a surprising turn of events, former World No. 3 Stan Wawrinka will not be participating in the US Open this year. The 40-year-old Swiss player, currently ranked 152 in the world, has been left out of the wildcards list announced by the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA). This is the second consecutive Grand Slam where Wawrinka, the 2016 US Open champion, has missed out on a wildcard invitation, having also failed to secure one for Wimbledon.

The USTA said in a statement, “We understand that fans will be disappointed that Stan will not be competing this year, but we have a responsibility to ensure a competitive and fair event.”

Venus Williams Makes Comeback at US Open

In contrast to Wawrinka’s absence, tennis legend Venus Williams will be back in action at this year’s US Open. The 45-year-old American, a two-time US Open winner, will be playing with a wildcard, marking her return to competitive tennis after a 16-month absence. Williams, who last played in Flushing Meadows in 2021, will also pair up with American teammate Reilly Opelka in the mixed doubles tournament.
