History in the Making: Olivier Rioux’s NCAA Debut
Tentative Todd Golden Listens to Fans, Inserts Olivier Rioux in NCAA History Books
GAINESVILLE — University of Florida Gators head coach Todd Golden obliged fans’ chants, inserting Quebecer Olivier Rioux into the game for an extraordinary moment in NCAA basketball history. With just 2:09 remaining in a 104-64 victory against North Florida University on Thursday, Rioux, standing at a towering 7 feet, 9 inches, stepped onto the court.
“It was great,” Rioux commented, reflecting on his debut. “The support from everyone was great, even on the bench. I think everyone supports me. I am very grateful for that.”
Upon making history, Rioux humbly replied, “It’s just another day, I guess.”
Smiles All Around as Rioux Makes His Debut
Rioux’s presence brought smiles to everyone’s faces, including his opponents. Despite conceding more than a foot in height, Trey Cady of North Florida University playfully competed against Rioux. “It was like guarding a legitimate giant,” Cady joked.
Standing Tall Among Giants: Rioux’s NBA Comparisons
- Rioux is two inches taller than NBA alumni Gheorghe Muresan and Manute Bol.
- He’s three inches taller than Yao Ming, Tacko Fall, and Shawn Bradley.
Golden praised Rioux’s attitude, saying, “He made an outstanding effort. He maintained an exemplary attitude despite limited playing time and opportunities.”
From Bench to History: Rioux’s Path to Stardom
Last season, Golden offered Rioux a choice: play sporadically or sit out to improve his skills. Rioux chose the latter and re-emerged as an NCAA history-maker this season.
