South American Surprise: Nicolás Jarry and Solana Sierra Make History
When the draw was made, eyebrows raised at the chances of a South American run at Wimbledon. Yet, here we are, celebrating Nicolás Jarry of Chile and Solana Sierra of Argentina in the round of 16. It’s the first time since 2004 that two South Americans have reached this stage.

Nicolás Jarry: The Chilean Comback King
Jarry, ranked 52, has barely won matches since reaching the Italian Open final last year. He had to qualify for Wimbledon and then fought back from two sets down to beat Holger Rune in the first round. On Friday, he toppled João Fonseca, the teenage Brazilian prodigy, in four sets.
Solana Sierra: The Lucky Loser’s Dream Run
Sierra, ranked 101, became the first lucky loser (a player who loses in qualifying but gets a spot in the main draw when someone pulls out) to reach the Wimbledon fourth round in the Open Era. Defeating Cristina Bucșa, she’s proven that fortune favors the brave (or in this case, the lucky!).
Did you know? This year, another lucky loser, Eva Lys, reached the fourth round of the Australian Open, also an Open Era first.
Andrey Rublev’s Wimbledon Redemption
Russian player Andrey Rublev hit rock bottom at Wimbledon 2024, losing his first-round match and destroying his racket in frustration. This year, he’s returned to the scene of his meltdown and made the fourth round. His composure on and off the court is a testament to his personal growth.
“Sometimes you learn the most from the worst cases.”
