ESGENOOPETITJ – The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in northeastern New Brunswick announced the arrest on Friday of a suspect wanted in connection with a fatal shooting, a day after the RCMP issued an emergency alert telling residents to lock their doors because the man was armed and had “dangerous intent.”

An RCMP social media post Friday afternoon did not provide details on where the suspect was arrested.

But earlier than that, residents of Esgenoopetitj (Burnt Church) First Nation and nearby areas were informed that they could return to their normal activities as investigators determined that the crime was an isolated incident.

The suspect was identified as Keith Martin, a 47-year-old American from Maine.

Police said at the time that he was last seen on Diggle Point Road, which is on the southern tip of the First Nation, about eight kilometers from Neguac, New Brunswick.

He was charged by the RCMP with killing a 48-year-old man and injuring him on Thursday afternoon.
