Hoffenheim Sporting Director Schicker Survives Power Struggle, Focuses on Champions League Push

The position of sporting director at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim was recently the subject of internal debate, with Andreas Schicker’s future at the club briefly in question. However, the Austrian has received a strong vote of confidence and will continue in his role.

Recent months have seen a power struggle within Hoffenheim, leading to the departure of several executives, including marketing director Tim Jost, chairman of the management board Markus Schütz, and managing director of finance Frank Briel. Reports suggested Schicker could also be affected, potentially facing a demotion. However, patron Dietmar Hopp publicly voiced his unwavering support.

Hopp even took legal action to prevent a shareholders’ meeting where Schicker’s dismissal was on the agenda, demonstrating his commitment to the sporting director. The club currently sits in third place in the Bundesliga, just three points behind second-placed Dortmund.

Schicker’s Response and Future Focus

Schicker acknowledged the difficult period, stating, I had toyed with the idea [of resigning]. But I felt from my immediate surroundings in the club that the club had become closer together during this phase. That wasn’t a given – and you don’t forget that. He also expressed his commitment to the club’s sporting success, saying, My goal is to continue TSG Hoffenheim’s sporting success story. That’s why my focus is on our top match on Sunday, when we face Bayern Munich.

Schicker rejected the possibility of a demotion, emphasizing his desire to maintain his current role. He also addressed the situation, stating, For me it was difficult to understand the timing. When you’re in a relegation battle, you recognize the rules. But in this situation that wasn’t the case. He added, It was a big surprise when I saw the invitation to the shareholders’ meeting, with the agenda item ‘removal’. I didn’t expect that at all. If you work successfully in my position – and I think if you are third with TSG, you can say that – then you actually don’t risk such a path. That’s why I was surprised.

Transfer Activity and Future Plans

Looking ahead, Schicker is focused on strengthening the squad. He confirmed ongoing discussions regarding an extension for midfielder Grischa Prömel, who is also attracting interest from VfB Stuttgart and Bayer 04 Leverkusen. We are working on it. He is playing a very good season. But we have economic limits – it is still open. Grischa is torn. He is thinking about his future very seriously. We know what we have in him – and he knows what he has here. Schicker stated.
