Refurbished Sports Court Honors Mexican Soccer Referee Katia Itzel García
Tribute to Katia Itzel García: A Symbol of Resilience and Excellence
The Faculty of Political and Social Sciences (FCPyS) at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) has paid a heartfelt tribute to one of its own, honoring the remarkable journey of Katia Itzel García, a professional referee, with the renovation of a sports court that now bears her name.

New Facilities for Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, and Badminton
The revamped court features new equipment and amenities, including cyclonic mesh goals for soccer, new basketball hoops, and nets for volleyball and badminton. The hard surface now includes a three-layer coating of asphalt with concrete, vinyl paint, and sand with resin.
An Inspiration for Future Athletes and Referees
“When I studied here, I dedicated my sport and my studies, it never happened to me that they were going to remodel the court and put my name. I feel very honored. It has not been easy, my passage through arbitration and football has been complicated, but the doors are increasing. They seem complicated,”

The court’s reopening was presided over by Alejandro Chanona Burguete, Director of FCPyS, along with Alejandro Fernández Varela Jiménez, Head of the General Directorate of University Sports (DGDU), and Katia Itzel García herself. Among her many achievements, García has been recognized with the National Sports Award 2024 and participated in the FIFA SEMINAR of Elite Referees for the 2026 World Cup.
A testament to the power of sport and education
The refurbished sports court serves as a testament to the power of sport and education in shaping individual careers and communities. By honoring García’s achievements, the FCPyS ensures that her legacy will inspire future generations of athletes and referees.
