Portland Trail Blazers’ defensive star Toumani Camara, now the highest-paid Belgian athlete, is reflecting on his journey after a stellar “sophomore” season that landed him a hefty $82 million contract over four years.
A New Challenge, New Responsibilities
“I put pressure on myself… We want to show that we deserve this money. I have to learn to manage this pressure…”
Despite a less dominant start to his third season, “The Box,” as he’s nicknamed in the NBA, has found his stride recently, contributing to his team’s current 9th position in the Western Conference and play-in tournament qualification.
“Collectively, things are going very well… Individually, I am not completely satisfied with my start to the season. There have been a lot of ups and downs, but I’m starting to find my rhythm… My role hasn’t really changed: I remain a defensive player, but I have to create the game more… I want to continue to learn and grow, especially as a leader. I need to be more vocal.”
Offensive Growth, Belgian Impact
While Camara’s average points have increased (12.8 vs 11.3 from last year), his long-distance shooting accuracy has dipped slightly (35.1% vs 37.5%).
“Offensively, I improved shooting… I worked a lot this summer to perfect it… The staff and my teammates trust me and encourage me to take more shots.”
Camara also emphasizes his impact on Belgian basketball, inspiring youngsters alongside fellow NBA player Ajay Mitchell.
“It’s nice to see more and more Belgians following basketball… If we can give hope to young people and make them dream, so much the better: this is also one of our objectives.”
