Tony Parker Eyes Coaching Role with ASVEL Next Season

French basketball legend and ASVEL president Tony Parker might be adding a new title to his resume next season – head coach of his own club, according to Le Progrès. Parker, who led the San Antonio Spurs to four NBA championships, could potentially replace current coach Pierre Viking following the expiration of his contract at the end of this season.

Parker’s Transition into Coaching

Parker’s interest in coaching is not new. In October 2022, he was appointed as head coach of the French U17 national team, a role he accepted in symbolic coincidence with his father’s birthday. “I talked a lot about this new career with my father,” Parker said at the time. “And it seemed logical to both of us to start with the French Team and a young French Team.”

From U17 to ASVEL: A Significant Step

However, taking the helm of ASVEL, one of France’s leading basketball clubs, would represent a significant step up for Parker. The club, based in Parker’s hometown of Lyon, seeks stability after making it to the EuroLeague semifinals last season. Parker, as president and potential head coach, would have a dual role to fill.

At this stage, however, no official confirmation has filtered through. – Le Progrès

Parker Seeks Inspiration in New York

Earlier this week, Parker was spotted in New York, where he met with current New York Knicks head coach Mike Brown. The meeting suggests that Parker is actively pursuing coaching advice, further fueling speculation about a potential ASVEL role.
