From Mat to Whistle: Nerea Vila’s Journey in Wrestling and Refereeing

A Modern Path After Injury

Nerea Vila (Vigo, 1993) is a national referee of lucha and international beach wrestling. Her journey in the sport took an unexpected turn after an injury forced her to step away from competition as the reigning Spanish youth champion. After a two-year hiatus, she found a new way to stay connected to the sport she loved.

Early Introduction to Wrestling

Vila’s initial involvement with wrestling was somewhat unconventional. She attended high school near the San Ignacio club, where friends practiced the sport. To gain permission from her parents, she initially told them she was going to badminton practice.

“Para empezar, le dije a mis padres que iba a bádminton,”

She eventually revealed her true passion, and her parents became enthusiastic supporters, traveling across Spain to watch her compete.

Discovering a Passion

Vila hadn’t previously known much about wrestling before getting involved. She had participated in other sports like badminton and swimming, but wrestling resonated with her deeply.

“I didn’t even realize that a sport like wrestling existed…When I entered the fight, I found my place. It was like this sport chose me.”

She trained at San Ignacio and later at the Pontevedra Technical Center before health issues led her to explore other avenues within the sport.

Transition to Refereeing

Initially considering coaching, Vila wasn’t fully convinced it was the right fit. A neighbor, who was president of the Galician association of referees, encouraged her to try refereeing. She gradually became more involved, and five years ago, along with a friend, she was encouraged to pursue higher-level certification.

“He didn’t give us a choice, he told us that in two weeks we had to apply for promotion. From there, everything was rolling.”

Reflecting on Her Competitive Career

Vila’s last competitive victory was winning the Spanish Championship at age 18. However, her career was cut short by an injury sustained during a training session for the Spanish team.

“Yes, yes. I was 18 years classic…At that moment, you suppose: I want to train, compete and win.”

She spent nearly two years away from the sport before finding her calling as a referee.

The Importance of Community

Vila emphasizes the strong sense of community among referees, particularly in Galicia and across Spain. She finds enjoyment in being at the center of the action during competitions.

“I found a highly united group, in which we are family in Galicia…Competitions can be greatly enjoyed being in the center of the mat with a whistle.”

Current Status and Future Aspirations

Currently, Vila is a top-level referee in Olympic wrestling in Spain, as well as in sambo and beach wrestling. While she aspires to officiate at the Olympic Games, she remains realistic about the competition.

“As an illusion, it would be great. Being a realistic person, it is unlikely.”

She continues to be involved with her original club, San Ignacio, which has a long tradition of wrestling in Galicia.

Understanding Wrestling Styles

Vila clarified the differences between wrestling and Greco-Roman wrestling. In wrestling, competitors can use their entire body, while Greco-Roman wrestling restricts holds to the upper body.

She likewise explained the card system used in wrestling, which is directed towards coaches for unsportsmanlike conduct.

“They are not for athletes, in wrestling they are for coaches…If they are not served, the situation may arise where the referee is not respected.”

Balancing Passion and Life

Vila successfully balances her passion for wrestling with her professional life, officiating competitions on weekends while working a regular job during the week.

“Obviously, you have to work…When you like it high, you don’t see it as spending days, you see it as an investment.”
