Vietnamese Star Arrives in Birmingham After Grueling Journey

Birmingham, England – Nguyen Thuy Linh, Vietnam’s number one badminton player, is set to compete at the prestigious All England Open Championships 2026, which begins today and runs through March 8th. Her arrival was far from straightforward, however, as she navigated a complex travel situation caused by escalating conflict in the Middle East.

Initially scheduled to depart on February 28th, Linh’s flight was canceled due to the closure of Qatari airspace. This presented a significant hurdle to her participation in the tournament.

A Race Against Time

Vietnamese officials worked tirelessly to secure an alternative route for Linh. The resulting journey proved arduous, requiring nearly 20 hours of travel with layovers in Mumbai, India and Paris, France, before finally arriving in Birmingham.

Upon arrival, Linh immediately headed to the practice courts to acclimate to the conditions and prepare for competition.

First Round Matchup

Linh, currently ranked 21st in the world, will face Line Christophersen of Denmark in the first round of the women’s singles event. The two players have met twice previously, with Linh winning both matches by a score of 2-1. Their most recent encounter at the Malaysia Masters saw Linh victorious with scores of 20-22, 21-11, and 21-18.

The All England Open is a BWF World Tour Super 1,000 event, attracting the world’s top badminton players and offering a total prize pool of $1.45 million (approximately 37 billion Vietnamese dong).
