The Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas announced on Tuesday that he will hang up his banner at the age of 38completing a career in which, during the golden season of tennis, he won six titles and reached number 19 in the ATP rankings.

“This journey began as a dream… with the innocence of a child who wanted to be a tennis player. From kayaking on the Uruguay River to Philippe Chatrierthe most vivid experience… the reality surpassed the dream“Said the former tennis player in a letter published on his Instagram account.

“Tennis has become more than a sport; it has become my passion, my daily motivationis why I wake up every morning with the desire to be better,” he added. “How many trips and places, how many people I met from the court, and what a great player. Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, just to name a few of this great era. “Everything I learned and the joy I went through, week after week, collecting and removing the bag, from race to race, I’m always excited.”

Owner of an amazing one-handed backhand, Cuevas retires with three titles in Sao Paulo (2015, 2016 and 2017), one in Rio de Janeiro (2016) and two more crowns in Bastad and Umag (both 2014). In addition, they take with them world victories, as they have conquered Nadal in the semi-finals of Rio 2016.

However, If Cuevas will be remembered for anything, it will be for his impossible shots. The Uruguayan player made everyone fall in love with the game which has remained in the newspaper archives for yearsas a backhand backhand in Madrid against Zverev or as a winner from under the legs against Nadal himself in Paris. Others, three minutes and a few pre-cooked what Pablo Cuevas gave to tennis. A true genius.

Cuevas played his last match as a professional in preparation for the US Open. However, he will continue to be connected to the world of tennis in some way, no matter how he chooses. “I will continue to be connected to tennis, because I love it, and it would be unfair to him if I can’t put everything I’ve learned into an endless journey. (…) I am excited about what is coming, what is happening soon and the new opportunities that will surely come. They are all friends,” Cuevas himself concludes in his letter on Instagram.
