The Sports Fair will consist of 33 events on the actual festive dates, activities that will reach 48 out of 23 sports disciplines if those that will take place immediately before and after the 2024 Fair, which will begin next Saturday, are counted.
The Councillor for Sports, Francisco Villaescusa, presented today, together with those responsible for the Municipal Sports Institute, a programme that will run until 29 September and includes activities in chess, martial arts, basketball, handball, baseball, cycling, inclusive sport, fencing, bodybuilding, football, indoor football, rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline gymnastics, golf, judo, kick boxing, wrestling, skating, synchronised swimming, radio control, rugby, tennis and table tennis.
According to the councillor, the calendar offers “an important and varied offering, a very attractive mix where top-level events are combined with popular and participatory events and exhibition events that are very popular.” Among the professional competitions, Villaescusa referred to “the women’s basketball and women’s handball matches of the highest category, or the Legends of Tennis Tournament.”
There will also be competitions of a marked local character and others with a lot of participation. Among those that will be held in the future, he mentioned the volleyball tournaments or the 3×3 basketball tournaments, and other notable disciplines are road cycling and wheelchair tennis, as well as the exhibition activities that take place at the Pincho de la Feria or the baseball game.
Among the ten new events are those that have yet to be held, such as the Spanish Road Cycling Championship, master categories, which will be held on the weekend of the 21st and 22nd, with 850 registered so far; the Spanish Open wrestling, also on the 21st and 22nd at the Juan de Toledo Pavilion; the Copa Feria badminton, next Saturday at the Parque Pavilion; the friendly match between two teams from the Endesa League that will be held on the 11th of September between Estudiantes and Jairis de Murcia at the Parque Pavilion; the two matches of the Spanish Basketball Cup that Bueno Arenas Albacete Basket will play against Fuenlabrada (on the 8th) and Cáceres (on the 15th); and baseball, on the 14th at the José Copete between Madrid Brewers and Molina del Segura, starting at 11 am.
The councillor highlighted the launch of the ‘Healthy Fair’, “an IMD commitment to start the Fair mornings in a different way, recharging the batteries”. At 10am, in Rabo de la Sartén, there will be stretching and very gentle gymnastics, with free water and fruit courtesy of Supermercados La Despensa, between the 10th and 13th.
As classic activities of the Sports Fair, the councillor highlighted the matches of Albacete Futsal, Bueno Arenas Albacete Basket, UDAF, Club Voleibol Albacete, handball, the Adeva Tournament, the synchronised swimming exhibition, the rhythmic gymnastics trophy, simultaneous chess games, bodybuilding, school cycling, wheelchair tennis and table tennis, the national inclusive 7-a-side football championship and the radio control and rugby tournaments, among others.
Finally, during the days of the Fair and in the fair area itself there will be exhibitions. On the 10th there will be chess in the Jardinillos and fencing in the Rabo de la Sartén; on the 11th, golf in the Pincho; on the 12th, inclusive sport in the Rabo de la Sartén; also on the 12th, trampoline gymnastics in the Pincho; and on the 16th, judo and wrestling also in the Pincho.
The councillor thanked the technical staff of the Municipal Sports Institute for their work. “It has not been easy to organise and distribute all the activities, combining dates and places, with a significant effort also from the maintenance staff,” he said.
