Villarreal Manager Marcelino Declares Premier League Dominates European Football

Villarreal coach Marcelino García Toral has offered a stark assessment of LaLiga’s current standing in European football, stating the English Premier League has surged ahead of the competition.

LaLiga’s Decline in Competitiveness

Speaking before a league match against Levante, Marcelino acknowledged a perceived decline in the technical and economic strength of Spanish football. He believes the Premier League’s financial power is a key differentiator.

“The level of the Spanish LaLiga is similar to that of the last five or six. There was a time when the clubs had a higher technical level. There was a better economic level. If you have more money, you bring in better quality players. I don’t notice any difference this year than the previous ones. We are the same.”

Marcelino went further, comparing the Premier League to the NBA in terms of its financial dominance. He highlighted the ability of even lower-table Premier League teams to attract top talent, citing the example of Yeremy Pino’s transfer.

“Now We find two teams that are not at the top, as corresponds to their history, such as Valencia and Sevilla. La Real is in a transition stage after having lost its backbone. This represents sometimes more marked by what the Spanish teams do in Europe. And there is something obvious, the Premier is the NBA. At the end of the market they took an important player for us, a club from the bottom took Yeremy and we couldn’t compete with them.”
