Badminton Denmark’s longest-serving and winning national badminton coach is retiring at the end of the year.

Kenneth Jonassen has decided to step down from Herningen after eight years as head coach and three years as deputy national coach.

– It has been a great honor and privilege to be the leader of the Danish national team for the past eight years. Together with my good coaching colleagues and players, I gave it my all. I am incredibly proud of the results we achieved together during the season, said Kenneth Jonassen in a press conference at Badminton Denmark.

– I am happy with my time as the national coach of Badminton Denmark and the cooperation with the players, my coaching colleagues and the sports director. But being the head coach of the national team is very demanding and I feel it is time to pass the baton to a new face who can continue the great project of Danish elite badminton, added Kenneth Jonassen.

Earlier this summer, Herning Volkeblad floated some of these ideas during an interview on the occasion of his 50th birthday.

– When you have the privilege of being given this job, it is a matter of honor for me to do 100%. I can’t negotiate. If I say A, I must say B, C, D, and E. Otherwise, I can’t see through the mirror. It doesn’t mean I’m having a hard time. This means that I have to evaluate how best to combine my daily life and travel activities so that I can accommodate both.

Sports Manager: It is the elite of coaching.

In addition to his impressive streak, Kenneth Jonassen coached Denmark’s players to Olympic gold, World Cup gold, Olympic silver and World Cup silver throughout his tenure as Denmark’s national coach.

Jonassen receives high praise from the famous and sports manager Jens Meibom in Badminton Denmark.

– He is a coaching legend that we have to say goodbye to and we will really miss him when he leaves at the beginning of the year. But I also know how difficult the job of head national coach is, so I fully understand his decision – he has given everything to Danish badminton, says Jens Meibom.

– Kenez’s ‘medal collection’ and list of achievements is incredibly impressive, and he is one of the most successful badminton coaches of all time – even from an international perspective. He achieved great success as the head national coach and developed Danish elite badminton in many areas, and has played a large role in the fact that Denmark is still able to compete with the world’s top nations. His commitment, professionalism and level of knowledge are absolutely world-class, says Jens Meibom.
