The José Antonio Santano International Young Poetry Prize reaches its fifth edition in 2024, framed within the generic name established by the Baena City Council of “City of Baena Awards”, but retaining its own identity, and it does so by standing out “for its great acceptance among young poets, maintaining scrupulous transparency in its decision as well as special attention to the quality of the texts sent by the participants”.

Specifically, the winner of this competition will receive as a prize the publication of the winning book in the Calíope collection, sculpture in Corten steel, the translation into ten languages, including the co-official languages of Spain, and the delivery of 100 copies, which justifies the promotion of the poet and his poetry collection in an edition that has nothing to envy of the proposals of the major publishers currently existing in Spain.

Since its creation in 2021 by the Baena City Council, this award has had growing acceptance not only in Spain but also internationally, especially in the member countries of the Latin American community. To date, four awards have been given: to Isabel Hernández-Gil Crespo (Madrid); to Andrés París Muñoz (Madrid); to Edwin Fi (Figueroa Acevedo) and to Christian Melogno, of Italian-Argentine nationality.

The organizers of this competition wanted to highlight that “in this way the town of Baena, with a population of just under 20,000 inhabitants, has been able to position itself on the world map of the best poetry being produced today and written by young people.”

They also stressed that “there is no other prize like it, not only in the province of Córdoba, but in the entire Autonomous Community of Andalusia, which is distinguished for promoting, indisputably, poetry as a means of artistic expression and in particular for being aimed at young people up to 35 years of age.” The call for entries to these awards ends on October 31.
