The Dream Shattered: Sergio ‘Checo’ Pérez’s Misfortune at F1 Mexico City Grand Prix

The dream of winning the F1 Mexico City Grand Prix ended abruptly for Sergio ‘Checo’ Pérez in the very first corner, where a collision with Charles Leclerc forced him out of his home race.

Checo Pérez began the race in fifth position on the grid and swiftly overtook Daniel Ricciardo and Carlos Sainz, while his Red Bull teammate made a move between the two Ferraris at the front row.

As Carlos Sainz encountered a delay, at the end of the straight, Verstappen was on the right, Leclerc in the middle, and Checo Pérez on the left, forming a Red Bull sandwich.

During the braking maneuver, Checo Pérez attempted to maneuver around the Ferrari, but as the angle closed, his car made contact with Leclerc’s, causing him to go airborne and sustain severe damage to the sidepod.

He managed to return to the track but had to retire in the pits due to the extent of the damage.

Efforts were made to repair the car by replacing the right side, but after a couple of minutes, with Checo Pérez still inside the car, the decision was made to call it quits.

This marks the second time in Checo Pérez’s Formula 1 career that he has been forced to retire from the Mexican GP. The first instance occurred in 2018 when he was with the Force India team due to a brake issue.
