Overcoming Obstacles to Deliver a Quality Badminton Venue

The path to ensuring badminton’s inclusion in the 2026 Arctic Winter Games was fraught with challenges, requiring significant ingenuity and effort from organizers and Team Yukon’s coaching staff.

The organization worked very hard to finally give us a super good quality pitch. The university went on strike, so we got together at the last minute without really having any premises. Finally, the organization decided to make the field in the soccer gymnasium, on a synthetic carpet. But we couldn’t play directly on the carpet, so we had to build a wooden surface. Approximately 127 sheets of plywood supported by two-by-fours were used. Then, we brought super nice quality carpets directly from Alberta by truck. Alain Dallaire, Team Yukon badminton coach

A Last-Minute Solution

A strike at the local university initially left organizers scrambling for a suitable location. The ultimate solution involved transforming a soccer gymnasium into a badminton court. However, playing directly on the synthetic carpet was not feasible, necessitating a complex construction project.

Building a Court from the Ground Up

The team constructed a wooden surface using approximately 127 sheets of plywood and two-by-fours. High-quality carpets were then transported from Alberta to complete the playing surface.

Team Yukon Ready to Compete

The Yukon Badminton Association has extended good luck wishes to the Badminton Yukon Arctic Winter Games Team 2026, with coaches Caroline Thibault and Alain Dallaire expressing satisfaction with the team’s preparation.
