Former tennis world number three Dominic Thiem is considering retiring soon, according to a media report. A farewell tour is apparently planned.

According to the “Salzburger Nachrichten”, Dominic Thiem will end his tennis career this year. The plan is for the 30-year-old to swing his racket on the ATP tour for the last time in October. Then the tournament will take place in Vienna in his Austrian homeland.

According to the plan, the event in Vienna would give Thiem a worthy setting for a farewell. Before that, the Austrian wants to play again at the French Open in Paris; starts in Geneva and in Kitzbühel in July are also possible.

Dominic Thiem was one of the best tennis players in the world for many years; in March 2020 he was ranked third in the world rankings. The highlight of his career so far is undoubtedly winning the US Open in the same year; Thiem is the first Austrian to ever win this Grand Slam.

Thiem was denied further Grand Slam victories; in spring 2020 he failed in the final of the Australian Open in five sets to Novak Djokovic. In 2018 and 2019 he reached the finals of the French Open.

However, after a serious wrist injury that he sustained in 2021, difficult years followed. After his comeback, Thiem was no longer able to build on his previous world-class performances and fell out of the top 100 in the world rankings.

Thiem had even thought out loud about resigning in recent months. “If I finish the year around 100th place again, like in 2022 and 2023, you have to think about whether it’s still worth it,” said the Austrian in January. At the same time, he separated from his coach Benjamin Ebrahimzadeh, but there was no turnaround.

Dominic Thiem is now ranked 117th in the world. In March he said: “If I keep losing, I will quit. In any job you have to be comfortable, otherwise it’s time to make a change.”
