There are several talents from the German Tennis Association among the top 1000 in the world, but in recent years no one has managed to reach the top. Eva Bennemann, 16, showed on Thursday, not for the first time, that she can attack the highest levels.
In the round of 16 of the ITF tournament in Braunschweig (W35) on Thursday, Eva Bennemann (number 1055 in the world ranking) beat Daniela Vismane from Latvia (number 426 in the world ranking) and thus the player who is ranked more than 600. places ahead of her in the WTA.
At 7:6 and 6:2, Bennemann, who took advantage of five out of eight break points, showed himself to be very strong. The freshman also shined with a strong comeback.
At the beginning, Bennemann had serious problems with the 18-year-old German Valentina Steiner (no points in the world rankings), but in the end she left the court as the winner.
Another big challenge awaits in the quarterfinals
In the quarterfinals, another big challenge awaits the second Russian Marina Melnikova (number 351 in the world ranking), who defeated Angelina Wirges (number 653 in the world) from DTB. Melnikova won 6:2 and 6:3.
However, Bennemann has been proving for weeks that he can do more. In 2024 he already won the youth championships in Eindhoven (J60), Ickern (J60) and Offenbach (J60), and at the J200 race in Basel he was narrowly defeated in the final by Victoria Pohle, who is also a DTB prospect. .
Bennemann also reached the finals of the W15 tournament in Kamen, where she lost to Stephanie Visscher (number 531 in the world rankings) from the Netherlands. The race in Braunschweig is Bennemann’s fourth appearance at the technical level this year and his fifth overall.
To reach the quarter-finals in Braunschweig, Bennemann will receive eight more international points, which should keep him in the top 1000.
