A Dream Forged in Youth

Slovakia’s national hockey team has reached the Olympic semifinals, fueled by a trio of young stars whose connection dates back to their childhoods. Juraj Slafkovský, Dalibor Dvorský, and Šimon Nemec are not only leading their country on the ice but are also living out a dream years in the making.

The roots of this success story trace back to 2016, when Slafkovský and Dvorský competed together as part of the Slovakia Selects 12U team at the World Selects Invitational in Bolzano, Italy. A year later, Slafkovský and Nemec played together at the International Pee-Wee tournament in Quebec City.

These early experiences laid the foundation for a future that is now unfolding on the Olympic stage.

NHL Success Translates to International Glory

The talent of these players has been recognized by the NHL. Slafkovský was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NHL draft by the Montreal Canadiens, followed by Nemec being selected No. 2 by the New Jersey Devils. Dvorský was chosen 10th overall by the St. Louis Blues in 2023.

Now, they are bringing that professional experience to the Olympic arena, leading Slovakia into a semifinal matchup against the United States.

Current Olympic Performance

Entering the semifinals, Slafkovský is tied for fifth in tournament scoring with seven points in four games, while Dvorský is tied for eighth with six points. Nemec anchors Slovakia’s top defensive pairing, averaging nearly 22 minutes of ice time per game.

Slovakia recently achieved a historic 4-1 victory over Finland, marking their first-ever Olympic win against the Finns. Juraj Slafkovský scored two goals in that game, with Dalibor Dvorský adding another, and Adam Ružička scoring into an empty net.

A New Generation

“I experience like this is the next generation,” said Washington Capitals defenseman Martin Fehérváry. They’re going to be really good names in the NHL and, hopefully, really big stars. They’re just growing up; each year, you can just see how Slafkovský and Nemec and Dvorský, they’re getting better and better and better. They’re becoming some of the top players in the tournament. It’s just really cool to see it.”

Living the Dream

“The Olympics and also to play for your country is the first thing that you’re dreaming about,” Nemec said. When we were young, we were always watching the Slovak team on the TV, so that was the first dream. We did it in 2022, but now it’s a different tournament with the best players in the world, and I think we’re doing a pretty good job.”

Slafkovský acknowledges the weight of expectation but is focused on enjoying the moment with his longtime friends.

“For sure, we were dreaming about it when we were small that one day we’re going to play for Slovakia and we desire to achieve things,” he said. So far, it’s happening, so I’m just enjoying it. Maybe when we’re going to have a beer when we’re 45 and retired, we’re going to gaze back and just laugh. Yeah, enjoy moments like this while it’s happening.”
