In the Masters-1000 there are 96 players and 32 seeds, who receive the bye and therefore start from the second round: here are the differences with Slam, 500 and 250
Scoreboard, entry list, seeded teams, byes. All terms we frequently use when we talk about tennis. And now, thanks to the media prominence of Jannik Sinner and the growth of the entire Italian movement, the racket is talked about everywhere. Even the most distracted people pick up on conversations, hear reasoning and terms that they are inevitably getting used to. But what is it actually about? Above all, how is the scoreboard of a tennis tournament compiled? Connecting to the draw of the Italian Internationals, here is the guide to understand which principles establish the path that each player must take to get to the end, to play for the title.
ENTRY-LIST AND SEEDINGS
—
Let’s start from the entry list: simply, it is the list of players registered for the tournament and who will therefore participate. In Rome, for example, the names of those who renounced do not appear: Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, even Andy Murray and Jiri Lehecka. The order in which the male and female tennis players appear refers to the position occupied in the ranking: in the men’s category, as the first eight of the entry list, we find Djokovic, Medvedev, Zverev, Ruud, Rublev, Tsitsipas, Hurkacz and Dimitrov, the which means that they will be the top eight seeds in the draw. Here, therefore, is the second fundamental concept: the seeded players are the players who are distributed with a criterion in the scoreboard, depending on the position occupied. And therefore on one side there will be the number 1 seed, on the other the 2: the first two players on the entry list can only face each other in the final.
DISTRIBUTION AND BYE
—
But clearly it doesn’t end there: number 3 and number 4 are entered one on one side and one on the other, with a random draw, and can only face number 1 and 2 respectively in the semi-final. In the Masters-1000 (96 players) and in the Slams (128) there are 32 seeded players, with the draw then establishing the quarter of the draw in which players from 5 to 8 are inserted and then the eighth of the draw in which the seeds fall from 9 to 16, before closing with the 16 players between 17 and 32. At this point, once the structure of the scoreboard with the distribution of the seeds is clear, all the players are drawn randomly others. The peculiarity of the 96-player Masters-1000 is that the seedings start from the second round: here we talk about the bye, which refers to the fact that the top 32 skip the first round match. In the Slams this doesn’t happen: as there are 128 players on the draw, distributed over 64 initial matches, everyone plays right away. The same happens for the 250 and 500 tournaments with 32 players at the starting line (in this case there are 8 seeds, an example is Rotterdam won by Sinner), while in the 250 and 500 with 48 players the seeds are 16 and receive a bye in the first round (an example is Barcelona). For the rest, even in tournaments where there are fewer participants than the 1000 or the Slams, the principles are the same.
