After a pretty crazy rookie season with the Spurs, Victor Wembanyama intends to continue for this September restart. It’s a big campaign that awaits the Frenchman, even if a former player is not necessarily that impressed.
Already back in San Antonio for a few weeks, Victor Wembanyama has resumed work with the Spurs. Rather discreet for the moment, the Frenchman is focusing on this recovery, especially after a busy summer with the Olympic Games. We imagine that he wants to get back in shape after a deserved vacation, but also work on certain details of his game.
Because if his first season in NBA was a success, in addition to being historic, there are always things to improve. Whether we are talking about his defense or his attacking play, including his shot selection, Wemby still has many areas where he can improve. Observers will in any case have a feast, including veterans of the league like Ralph Sampson.
Former Minister questions Wembanyama’s game
A Suns player during his career, Sampson had the opportunity to discuss the Wembanyama case in a recent interview. It must be said that Sampson is about the same height, so AZCentral asked him to compare the two eras. Could Wemby have shone during his? His answer is very clear.

Ralph Sampson sur Victor Wembanyama : “He’s a different player in a different era of basketball. He’s got some really good skills. He’s got a really good work ethic from what you can see, but he doesn’t have to play in the post, and if he did it would be a lot different. There’s no big guys to play against him. He’s playing against small guys, so it’s a different game.”
“We had to play guys like Terry Cummings, AC Green, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Artis Gilmore, real guys that could destroy you once you got in the post. So you could just run the floor and beat them, or you could just take them in the post because they weren’t going to let you get a shot. The game has changed a lot over the course of its evolution, it’s a different era, a different way of playing, a different structure.”
Could Victor Wembanyama have shone at that time? The answer is mixed for the former Ralph Sampson, who believes that the Frenchman does not necessarily play much with his back to the basket in order to get the better of his opponents. It is clear that the game has changed quite a bit.
