France defeated Italy 33-8 on Sunday, maintaining their position at the top of the Six Nations table and keeping their Grand Slam ambitions firmly on track.

Dominant First Half Sets the Tone

Les Bleus established control early, showcasing a different level of performance compared to a previous encounter with Italy two years prior. That earlier match saw a near-defeat for the French in Lille, prompting a team rejuvenation that has yielded significant results.

Louis Bielle-Biarrey opened the scoring, achieving a record-breaking eighth consecutive try in Six Nations fixtures. The try came after a kick through from Antoine Dupont.

France continued to build momentum with a try from Emmanuel Meafou, following an intricate play initiated by Thomas Ramos, who was filling in for the injured Matthieu Jalibert.

Italy Responds, But France Maintains Control

Italy mounted a spirited response, but France’s defense proved resilient. Ange Capuozzo managed to score for Italy, capitalizing on a turnover.

“I don’t care if I’m not scoring tries,” said Dupont on the eve of the match. “I enjoy myself in another role,” he added, one where scoring is not really the aim.

Late Surge Seals the Victory

A late surge, aided by a sin-bin for Italy’s Louis Lynagh, allowed France to extend their lead. Gael Dréan scored his first try for France, set up by a cross-field kick from Ramos. Émilien Gailleton then added another try before full-time.

Italy coach Gonzalo Quesada acknowledged his team’s mistakes, stating: It was just a matter of the second half having more quality ball, especially in lineouts where we know we can build opportunities. They didn’t have a great game either.

Italy captain Michele Lamaro commented: The scoreboard is always the truth of the game and we have to go with that. France were unbelievably fine at taking their opportunities, especially in the first half.
