Serena Williams Fuels Comeback Speculation: Is a Return to Tennis Imminent?
The tennis world is buzzing with anticipation as Serena Williams, considered by many the greatest women’s tennis player of all time, is now eligible to compete on the WTA Tour and at Grand Slams for the first time in nearly four years. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) listed Williams, 44, on its roster of reinstated players on February 22, 2026.
This development has ignited discussions about a potential return to the sport she once dominated. To participate in tournaments, Williams had to be available for unannounced doping tests for six months, a requirement she has now fulfilled.
A Shifting Stance on Retirement
Initially, Williams dismissed the possibility of a comeback. In December, she posted on X: Omg yall I’m NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy.
But, during a January interview on “Today,” she offered a more ambiguous response, laughing and stating, If I want to put it to bed … Listen, I want to go to bed — it’s early.
Representatives for Williams have not commented further.
Recent Training and Expert Opinions
Further fueling speculation, reports surfaced this month that Williams has been training with Alycia Parks (WTA 77). Parks shared, She’s in great shape. I think she would cause a sensation on the tour.
Jim Courier noted in January, Unless she gets injured, she will undoubtedly play somewhere again at some point.
He emphasized the commitment required to remain in the anti-doping program, stating, No one who doesn’t plan to play a professional tournament takes part in this doping control program – and certainly not someone with as much experience as Serena Williams.

Looking Ahead: Potential Tournament Appearances
Williams played her last tournament at the US Open in 2022, describing her departure as a desire to evolve
away from the professional tour. She has since been removed from the world rankings.
The upcoming WTA 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells (March 4-15) and Miami (March 17-29) are potential venues for a return. However, it’s noted that Williams has historically avoided Indian Wells. Patrick Mouratoglou, her former coach, believes a comeback is entirely possible, stating, Anything is definitely possible with her. If there’s anyone I would trust to have a successful comeback, it’s Serena.
