Samurai Japan Kickstarts 2026 World Baseball Classic™ Preparation in Miyazaki
The 2026 World Baseball Classic™ is just around the corner, and the defending champions, Samurai Japan, have officially kicked off their preparation campaign with the Miyazaki Spring Camp. The camp, held at the picturesque Hinata Sun Marine Stadium Miyazaki, began on February 14 with a riveting opening ceremony and a star-studded lineup of support.
A Grand Welcome to Miyazaki
The day started with a meeting led by Coach Hirokazu Ibata, who emphasized the importance of injury prevention and reminded the team of their new challenger status despite being the reigning champions. The team was then greeted with local delicacies and heartfelt messages from Miyazaki Prefecture, Miyazaki City, Mitsubishi UFJ Bank, and junior high school baseball teams across the country.
Star Power Boosts Camps
Adding to the excitement, legendary players Hideki Matsui and Yu Darvish joined the camp as special advisors. Matsui, a two-time Central League MVP, and Darvish, a 2013 Cy Young Award winner, provided invaluable insights and inspiration during the first day’s practice. Their presence drew a thunderous applause from the stands, setting the stage for an electrifying camp.
“I hope you have a great journey to Miami,” said Hideki Matsui, “Please feel free to say hello.”
“I want to help them get into the actual game smoothly and without anxiety,” Yu Darvish added.
Intense Days Ahead
Coach Ibata was impressed with the team’s performance on the first day, crediting the players’ top-class moves and the positive influence of Matsui and Darvish. With many pitchers scheduled for bullpen duty on the second day, the camp is expected to heat up as the team progresses towards the WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC™.

Before the WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC™, Samurai Japan will face off against Fukuoka Softbank Hawks in Miyazaki on February 22 and 23, and Chunichi Dragons in Nagoya on February 27 and 28. The team’s first game in the WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC™ will be held on March 6 against Chinese Taipei in Tokyo.
