I’m Russell Schelberg, your St. John’s neighborhood reporter. It was a big night here downtown as neighbors gathered to celebrate the homecoming and return of Jaycee Simon and her silver medal from the Paris Paralympics.

Neighbors from all over Michigan requested their spots ahead of the parade…

“I took my car and left it at 3 o’clock,” said Luann Mizka, a neighbor of St. John’s.

An early place to come home not only to watch the parade, but also to welcome badminton athlete Jayci Simon back to Paris with a Paralympic silver medal. It is the first medal for St. John.

“To come home with a medal means the world to me, and it represents the community behind me. Without my community and my family, I wouldn’t be here today,” Simon said.

It was not only the community that stood with him from afar during the game, but she enjoyed passing by this house.

“It’s amazing to have all the bands, from kindergarten through the students who graduated from many years ago, and everyone is happy to be here,” said Chief David Kirk. St. John’s Police Department.

“I just appreciate everyone behind me. It’s great,” Simon said.
