Wimbledon: Sabalenka Unfazed by Hollywood Stars and Early Upsets
World No. 1 Keen to Avoid the Spotlight
Even the top tennis players have their star-struck moments. World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka is no exception. In a revealing admission, she confessed that she had to fight the urge to stare at the glittering array of celebrities who graced the Royal Box during her Wimbledon match on Wednesday.
“I was trying not to look today. I’m really glad I wasn’t looking there, I would be like this the whole match,” Sabalenka said, laughter rippling through the room as she mimicked the heart-eyed emoji.
The Royal Box boasted an illustrious line-up, including singer Olivia Rodrigo, professional wrestler John Cena, Foo Fighters musician Dave Grohl, and actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas with husband Nick Jonas.
Focused Despite Early Upsets
Sabalenka’s resolve was tested not just by the celebrities but also by the unexpected upsets of other top seeds. For the first time since 2018, all four other Top 5 seeds crashed out in the first two rounds. Sabalenka, however, remained undeterred, barely averting defeat twice in the first set alone against Marie Bouzkova.
Sabalenka’s Composure in the Face of Upsets
- She acknowledged the upsets but chose to focus solely on her own game.
- Her strategy: “Take it one step at a time, do not look at the draw, and keep fighting.”
- She believes this approach gives her the best chance to win each match.
Sabalenka’s Road Ahead at Wimbledon
Sabalenka, after her 7-6, 6-4 victory, now faces Iga ÅšwiÄ…tek in the third round. ÅšwiÄ…tek, currently ranked No. 7, will provide a stiff challenge. However, Sabalenka’s resilience in the face of distractions bodes well for her chances.
