Sabalenka Defeats Mboko, Advances to Indian Wells Semifinals

Indian Wells, CA – World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka secured her place in the BNP Paribas Open semifinals, overcoming a strong challenge from No. 10 seed Victoria Mboko with a 7-6(0), 6-4 victory on Thursday. Sabalenka saved all five break points she faced during the match.

Sabalenka’s Dominance Continues

The win marks Sabalenka’s sixth consecutive semifinal appearance on the WTA Tour Driven by Mercedes-Benz. Her last defeat prior to this run came in the Cincinnati quarterfinals last August against Elena Rybakina. This is Sabalenka’s third career semifinal at Indian Wells, having previously finished as the runner-up in 2023 and 2025.

Despite the loss, Mboko showcased her potential, tallying 28 winners to 26 unforced errors. She saved seven out of eight break points against Sabalenka. However, four of the seven points in the first-set tiebreak were lost due to unforced errors.

“I had a lot of chances in the first set,”

“And, I imply, it’s unfortunate that I was unable to kind of take them as much as I could, but she was playing really well, especially on pressure points. I gotta give credit to her there. I feel like sometimes I was maybe one or two points away from kind of maybe changing how the first set would have went and changing the momentum.”

Sabalenka praised Mboko’s potential, stating, “I think all of those young kids who’s on tour right now, they all have a huge potential to be Grand Slam champions. I just spot how aggressive (Mboko) is, how passionate she is, how much she’s fighting on court and never giving up. I see this as a future Grand Slam champion, for sure.”
